Cooking with Kids

“Can I help? Can I? What about me? I wanna help!” This is what you will be hearing you when let your children know what is for dinner tonight. The easiest (and least stressful) way to cook with your children is to set up first. Do any prep work you may need to do first--like cook the meat or boil the noodles. Having three young children at home I find the best way we work is TOGETHER.
Everyone needs to have a “job” to feel like they are a part of the dinner cooking experience. Just tonight I gave my middle child the pre-dinner jobs (setting the table, filling the glasses, getting out the needed condiments and recycling any used cans, glass or plastic). My youngest was “chef” for the night and got to do all the mixing, stirring, spreading and, yes, tasting. My oldest who had her nose in a book wanted to help but couldn’t tear herself away so she got the “after dinner helper” job of clearing and cleaning while having me to herself to tell all about her book. This way each child got some special attention and worked on dinner all together. They were quick to tell Daddy that they all helped with dinner.

Caesar Salad
Ingredients:
- 1 head of Romaine lettuce
- 1 bag of shredded parmesan cheese
- Caesar dressing of your choice
- 1 pkg. or box of croutons

Directions:
- Wash and dry romaine lettuce and break apart into smaller pieces.
- Top with sprinkling of cheese and croutons.
- Add salad dressing to taste.

Lasagna
Ingredients:
- 1 box of Lasagna noodles, cooked and drained
- 1 pound of ground beef, cooked and drained (This is a step for adults.)
- 1 jar of your favorite spaghetti sauce
- 1 large container of ricotta cheese or cottage cheese for a healthier twist that’s tastes great
- 1 bag (about 2 cups) of shredded mozzarella cheese

Directions:
- Mix the cooked ground beef in a bowl with the whole jar of spaghetti sauce and set aside.
- Using a 9 x 12 pan, spoon 1/3 of the meat/sauce mixture into the pan.
- Next, lay 3 of the lasagna noodles side by side on top of the sauce mixture.
- Spoon 1/3 of the ricotta or cottage cheese mixture.
- Sprinkle 1/3 of mozzarella cheese over top.
- Repeat layers two more times.
- Sprinkle remaining mozzarella cheese over top.
- Bake at 350 for 35-40 minutes or until bubbly.

Homemade Cheese/Garlic Bread
Ingredients:
- 1 long loaf of French bread
- Shredded cheese of your choice--cheddar, mozzarella or parmesan are good options.
- Garlic powder to taste

Directions:
- Slice bread in half length wise so it looks like a big sandwich.
- Spread butter or margarine on the inside of both halves.
- Lay the pieces side by side (butter on top) and sprinkle with cheese.
- When the lasagna comes out and is cooling, put the bread in for 8-10 minutes or until slightly brown.
- Serve cut into rectangles pieces.

Ice Cream Sundaes
Dessert tonight is a quick and easy “make your own”. Provide your family’s favorite ice cream flavors. Add a few fun toppings--caramel, chocolate, mini marshmallows, sprinkles, cherries or bananas--and let them make their own. Waffles bowls are a fun treat to serve the ice cream in as well.

Tonight’s dinner provides a variety of tastes and textures that complement each other for a wonderful meal. The cool, crisp Caesar salad served with the warm lasagna and crunchy cheese bread is sure to fill those hungry bellies. Bon Appétit!
